Concise revision note

  1. Before touching a patient.
  2. Before a clean or aseptic procedure.
  3. After body-fluid exposure risk.
  4. After touching a patient.
  5. After touching patient surroundings.

The sequence matters: moments 1–2 protect the patient; moments 3–5 follow exposure, patient contact, or contact with the patient’s immediate surroundings. WHO includes hand hygiene after glove removal when a hand-hygiene opportunity occurs.
